A seminar at Laboratoire d’Analyse et d’Architecture des Systèmes (LAAS-CNRS), Toulouse, France at 11:00-12:30, December 22nd, 2009 hosted by Dr. J.P. Laumond. “Recent Studies of Human Modeling at University of Tokyo” was the title of seminar. After discussing with the host on the day before, I chose to talk on motion semiotics, structurism, and language rather than neuromusculoskeletal modeling.

“Toward Humanoid Robots Communicating with Humans” was the fourth and the last lecture on 12.16.2009. Statistical models of proto-symbols of motion and computational linguistics are beautifully connected and allow mutual association between motion and language. It is still a challenge and on-going research for the break-through of human-computer communication. The four lectures were an interim summary of research started in 1998 originally as the CREST project. I would like to thank to Prof. Alain Berthoz who provided me with an opportunity to prepare for it. Many thanks to students and colleagues at YNL and elsewhere who were and still are on board with me.

What’s a long word! The third lecture was done on 12.10.2009. It was on “Toward Humanoid Robots Understanding Human Sensation.” The lecture was as the same time for one of six keynote lectures at Humanoids2009. The title for keynote was “Neuromusculoskeletal Human Modeling from Robotic Optimization and Algorithms.” Implication of Anthropomorphism is the depth and width of humanoid robotics. The photo is a rental-bike station. It’s convenient, but cold in mid December.

The second lecture was done on Wednesday (12.2.2009, 17:00) this week. The title was “Toward Humanoid Robots Accumulating Human Behaviors.” The lecture was on the symbolic modeling human behaviors. The structurism is the underlying philosophy of the symbolic behavior modeling based on the mimesis theory. The introduction of lecture placed it as the theoretical background of the study. It was most privileged to make this lecture at Collège de France, where Professor Claude Lévi-Strauss, the central structuralist, held the chair of cultural anthropology. He passed away the last month at one hundred years of age. The photo is from a rainy Sunday of sculptures at Louvre.

I plan to make a series of four lectures on humanoid robotics, being hosted by Prof. Alain Berthoz, Professeur au Collège de France, Chaire de physiologie de la perception et de l’action. The overall title of the series is: “Contemporary Study in Humanoid Robotics” (1) Challenges in Humanoid Robotics (11.25.2009, 17:00) (2) Toward Humanoid Robots Accumulating Human Behaviors (12.2.2009, 17:00) (3) Toward Humanoid Robots Understanding Human Sensation (12.10.2009, 16:00) (4) Toward Humanoid Robots Communicating with Humans (12.16.2009, 17:00) The first lecture was made this Wednesday. The photo is the pyramid of Louvre after the first lecture.
